Three names — three different selection tasks
Coconut oil comes from the coconut palm. Palm kernel oil comes from the kernel of the oil palm fruit, while palm oil comes from the fruit's flesh. The terms “palm oil” and “palm kernel oil” are therefore not interchangeable.
Coconut and palm kernel oils are classed as lauric oils. Being in the same group does not remove the differences between specific products or the requirements of your process.
Processing matters
When ordering, clarify the oil type and required processing. The product, processing method, brand and manufacturer must match in the name and documentation. If a fraction or modified product is required, this is a separate condition in the technical brief.
Do not select an option from a photograph or a broad product category alone. Procurement requires the selected brand's documents and application requirements.
What to include in an enquiry
- Exact oil name.
- Refining, deodorisation and other processing requirements.
- Quality parameters from your specification.
- End product and application conditions.
- Packaging, batch and transport and storage restrictions.
Replacement requires a formulation review
If the aim is to replace an existing ingredient, start with the current brand's specification. Compare composition and performance characteristics, then agree a trial.
